Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media also a speaker who is Canadian. She founded Feminist Frequency, a site that features videos and comments discussing the depictions of females in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist journalist from Canada and a blogger. She is the creator and director of executive for Feminist Frequency an educational, non-profit website which explores representations of women within popular culture narratives. Alongside working to expose the issues surrounding sexual harassment and attack on women and other minorities in online spaces she is committed to breaking down the stigmas and stereotypes prevalent in pop culture. A graduate in the field of political and social thinking at York University Sarkeesian is also an extremely sought-after public speaker and she has delivered speech at the TEDxWomen Festival and the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Passionate about issues of gender identity and feminism from at an early age, she created her site Feminist Frequency in 2009, while still a student at the University. It was a girl with a dream to develop the series of videos on the internet to examine the gender representations in video games. In the end, she ended up being the victim of online harassment. She was not deterred from the attack, and actually, it just reinforced her drive to become a media critic and feminist. She has won numerous awards in recognition of her many prominent contributions to the field of feministism.
